Become an Acceptance Test Employer
Due to state regulations, every Certified Acceptance Test Technician must work under — or be — a Certified Acceptance Test Employer. The ATE course is a self-paced online class, and your ATE Handbook is mailed to you as a reference tool.
California requires all ATEs to take an online recertification course each new code cycle, regardless of when they were certified. The next code cycle takes effect January 1, 2029.
Considerations & requirements
- Applicable business license, business tax certificate, or EIN.
- Comprehensive general liability insurance with a policy limit of at least $1,000,000.
- Worker's compensation insurance (if required by the state).
- At least 3 years of verifiable experience in lighting-controls systems.
- No contractor/business license suspended or revoked in the last 5 years, and no findings of fraud, theft or dishonesty.
- A testing-software license is required per permit number ($200–$250 each, depending on single or bulk purchase).
The application process
- 1Create an account and complete your account information.
- 2Complete the company information and submit the required documents.
- 3NLCAA reviews your application and notifies you of approval.
- 4Log in to make payment and complete your online class.
- 5Pass the final quiz with 75% or better.
- 6NLCAA emails your ATE number and certificate.
